Launch madness starts again
January 15th, 2009 by Richelo Killian ·
Here we are in the third official week of 2009, and the Internet Marketing launches are coming thick and strong!
Don’t get me wrong here, I have no problem with big product launches which are promoted by every man and his dog.
It’s the nature of our business and comes part and parcel with Internet Marketing, especially since Product Launch Formula by Jeff Walker hit the streets a couple of years ago.
Internet Marketing is not the only industry that does launches though.
Here are just some examples of other industries doing product launches:
- Movies
- Cars
- Food
- Computer hardware and software
So, why then do I start off this post, sounding like I am about to complain about product launches?
Let me kind of answer you by asking a question…
Of all the launches in Internet Marketing you have seen since you have been involved in IM, how many of those products are still actively marketed and sold? How many are still being discussed even a couple of weeks after the launch?
Again, I am NOT knocking big launches!!! I have done a couple myself.
I know what incredible hard work goes into preparing for one of these launches.
It takes a LOT of work, and incredible coordination of hundreds of elements and people.
The problem I DO have is the fact that MOST, NOT all, but most of the marketers involved in doing these launches are already working on the NEXT big launch before the current one is even 100% done.
I have a problem with the fact that said marketers HAVE to constantly come up with new products to keep their income going.
Let’s use Microsoft as an example here…
Right, so, they came out with Windows XP, and it was a HUGE launch.
After the initial launch phase, they started focusing on making XP better. Yes, there was ALSO new development going on, but, this was NOT by the XP team.
The XP team focused on improving and fixing XP.
The last time I looked, most people in Internet Marketing does not have the types of resources that Microsoft has to continue development on an existing product, while at the same time, creating new products.
This poses a bit of a dilemma in my ideal world of IM business.
There is no clear solution, but……
We can strive for this type of model, which has our existing products not only continue to sell to new customers, but, we’re actually improving the product as time goes on.
Am I a dreamer here, or are there actually other people out there that believe that we COULD get out of this perpetual launch cycle?
